What is the exact model?
Ask for model and serial number photos. Check storage, whether it has a disc drive and the controller version included.

A console that starts can still overheat, reject discs or be blocked online. Run it long enough and test the controller too.
Before you leave
Ask about exact version and storage. A console generation often has several models with different drives, ports or cooling.
Ask for model and serial number photos. Check storage, whether it has a disc drive and the controller version included.
Ask about overheating, HDMI damage, replaced drive, fan, power supply or storage, and any opening or DIY repairs.
Ask whether it connects normally to the official online service and has ever had a block or ban.
Agree which controller, cables, stand, discs and accessories are included. Digital games usually belong to an account, rather than the console.
Problems often appear later
A cold console may seem quiet and stable. Gaming reveals fan behaviour, heat, power issues and possible online restrictions.
Ask the seller to leave it off until you arrive. Watch for errors, picture faults, clicking and unexpected restarts.
Run a real game for a while. Fan speed can increase, but extreme noise, shutdowns or heat warnings are bad signs.
Have the seller demonstrate access to the official online service. Do not sign into your account until purchase and factory reset are complete.
Test drive, network, storage and controller first. Then remove all accounts and reset correctly to factory settings.
Inspect the whole product
Look for impact damage, missing screws, broken seals and a readable serial number matching settings or packaging.
Avoid moving plugs during use, but check ports are firm and picture, audio, charging and accessories work steadily.
Insert a familiar clean disc, start the game and eject it. Grinding, repeated reading attempts or rejection are suspicious.
Test buttons, triggers, sticks, vibration, port and wireless connection. Watch especially for movement without touching: stick drift.
Check promised capacity, Wi-Fi or network cable, downloads and expansion storage.
Use the correct power cable. Vents may be dusty but should not be blocked, damaged or become extremely hot.
The gaming test
Start a game, load a busy level and actually play. This reveals heat, graphics, storage, drive and controller problems sooner.
Turn it fully off and on. Check startup time, picture, audio, storage messages and unexpected error codes.
Use a disc or installed game. Play long enough to warm it up and listen to fan and drive.
Move sticks slowly through their full range, press every button and trigger, and test wireless connection and wired charging or connection.
Demonstrate online access without your own account. Note serial number, then remove accounts and data.
